Community Impact

We do not run a corporate responsibility programme as an afterthought. Our impact is embedded in the model. When we source from a pastoral community, that community earns a fair price. When sales grow, community incomes grow with them.

Our Approach

Impact that is structural — not discretionary.

Most corporate giving programmes are discretionary — expanded in strong years and reduced when conditions tighten. Our approach is different. We believe long-term supply chain resilience comes from building strong pastoral sourcing communities alongside a strong commercial business.

Pastoral communities across Kenya — Shepherds Source sourcing region

Pastoral communities across Kenya — the foundation of our supply chain and our giving programme.

Our model operates at three levels.

1
Fair & transparent sourcing prices

We pay fair and transparent market prices for every animal we source — creating direct economic value at the point of trade.

2
Corporate responsible sourcing collaboration

We collaborate with corporate buyers to support responsible sourcing initiatives within the communities behind the supply chain.

3
Foundation & development partnerships

We work with foundations and selected development partners that support long-term pastoral resilience, livestock productivity, and community development within sourcing regions.

The Model

Three levels of impact. All structural.

1
Fair sourcing prices — the commercial foundation

Every pastoral community we source from is paid a fair market price for their animals. This is the largest and most direct form of value creation we provide. It is also the most important: it makes our supply chain sustainable, our product authentic, and our community relationships durable.

2
Foundations and development partnerships — supporting long-term resilience

We work with foundations, development partners, and selected non-profit organisations that support pastoral livelihoods, water access, education, and broader community resilience within our sourcing regions. These partnerships help unlock longer-term investments in the communities behind the supply chain.

3
Corporate co-funding — scaling beyond our own resources

We invite wholesale buyers and institutional partners to co-fund community programmes as part of their supply chain responsibility commitments. Buying from Shepherds Source can also mean contributing directly to the communities behind the product.

Our Programmes

Four areas. Chosen by the communities we serve.

These programmes reflect what the pastoral communities we work with have identified as the priorities that most directly affect their long-term wellbeing.
